Examples of Urgent Dental Concerns
Severe Toothache
A sudden, severe toothache can be debilitating and is a sign of infection or advanced decay. If you’re experiencing intense tooth pain, rinse your mouth with warm water and take over-the-counter pain medication as directed. Apply a cold compress to your cheek to reduce swelling. Never place aspirin directly on your gums or teeth because this can cause tissue damage.
Dr. Sheplak will examine your tooth to determine the cause of your pain. Treatment may include a dental filling, root canal therapy, or tooth extraction, followed by a replacement option.
Knocked-Out Tooth
If your tooth has been knocked out, retrieve it by holding the crown (not the root), rinse it gently without scrubbing, and try to place it back in the socket. If this isn’t possible, keep the tooth moist in milk or saliva until you reach our office. Time is critical here! The sooner you see us, the better our chances of saving your natural tooth.
Dr. Sheplak will attempt to reinsert and stabilize your natural tooth. If the tooth cannot be saved, we offer several tooth replacement options, including dental implants, bridges, or partial dentures.
Broken or Cracked Tooth
If you’ve broken or cracked a tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces if possible and bring them to your appointment.
Depending on the severity of the break or crack, treatment may include dental bonding, a dental crown, or root canal therapy followed by a crown.
Dental Abscess
A dental abscess is a painful infection at the root of a tooth or between the gum and tooth. Symptoms include severe, persistent, throbbing toothache, a fever, face or cheek swelling, and sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. This is a serious condition that can lead to widespread infection if left untreated.
Treatment typically involves draining the abscess, root canal therapy, or extracting the tooth, along with antibiotics to clear the infection.
Lost Filling or Crown
If you’ve lost a filling or crown, try to keep the area clean by rinsing with warm salt water. If you have the crown, you can temporarily reattach it using dental cement available at most pharmacies, but this is only a short-term solution until you can see Dr. Sheplak.
Dr. Sheplak will either replace your filling or create a new crown to restore your tooth’s function and appearance.
Soft Tissue Injuries
Injuries to the lips, cheeks, gums, or tongue can result in bleeding. Rinse your mouth with a mild salt-water solution, and apply pressure with a clean cloth or tea bag to control bleeding.
Dr. Sheplak will clean the area, assess the damage, and may use stitches to repair the injury if necessary.
If swelling is rapidly worsening, or if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, call 911.
Our Approach to Urgent Dental Problems
When we evaluate an urgent concern, our goal is to:
- Identify the cause of pain or swelling
- Stabilize the tooth or affected area
- Discuss options clearly, including timing and costs
- Create a plan that supports long-term tooth health
In some cases, the best first step is diagnosis and short-term stabilization, followed by definitive treatment at a later visit. This is important when comfort and predictability are the priority.
